Bitcoin Slips Below $82,000 as Oil and Tech Stocks Pressure Risk Assets

Bitcoin Movement Overview

Bitcoin fell 1.8% to $81,657 as of 05:53 UTC+8 on 9 October 2026,extending its losses for the week. Rising oil prices and a selloff in US technology shares weighed on risk appetite. A pause in the US Treasury bond rout helped limit the decline.

Other major cryptocurrencies fell with bitcoin, as the sector faced profit-taking after an extended rally through the September quarter. Fresh purchases by Strategy, the largest corporate holder of bitcoin, did little to slow the decline.

Key Driver Behind The Move

Oil prices rose on Thursday after attacks on commercial shipping in the Middle East. Concerns that adverse weather along the US Gulf coast could disrupt supply added to the gains. Crude pared some of its rise after President Donald Trump said the US would not attack Iran before the midterm elections. Media reports had earlier said such a move was under consideration.

Technology stocks on Wall Street also came under pressure. The Financial Times reported that OpenAI’s annualized revenue was lower than previously signaled, citing financial documents shared with investors.

Market Data And Reaction

US bond markets offered some relief. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell to close at 5.225%, easing after a sustained selloff. Analysts attributed the move to exhaustion among bond bears.

Higher borrowing costs tend to weigh on cryptocurrencies because they reduce the appeal of speculative assets relative to debt.

Broader Market Implications

The policy outlook remains a pressure point for crypto. Minutes of the Federal Reserve’s September meeting, released on 7 October 2026, showed most policymakers expect another rate hike by year-end. On 8 October 2026, Reuters reported that Fed Governor Christopher Waller anticipated additional rate increases if the economy evolves as expected, though he emphasized that they do not need to occur at consecutive meetings.

Near-term pricing is less hawkish. According to the CME FedWatch tool, traders largely expect the Fed to hold rates at its meeting later this month. Recent data showed softer-than-expected inflation and a weak jobs report.

What Crypto Traders Should Watch

  • The Fed’s policy decision on 28 October 2026, and any guidance on the timing of the next hike.
  • Oil price moves tied to Middle East shipping and US Gulf coast weather.
  • US Treasury yields, and whether the bond selloff resumes.
  • Developments involving Iran ahead of the US midterm elections on 3 November 2026.
